Bascarsija, Sarajevo
July 1st - July 31st 2006

“The Nights of Bascarsija” is the greatest summer cultural festival in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

It is being held every year, for the whole month of July, with the performances held both on the central stage (located opposite to the Town Hall) and on many open air stages of the capital.

Naturally, the greatest number of events is held in the city’s historic, old part that is abundant in many valuable cultural-historic monuments.

The high quality festival events, the attractive locations and the free entrance have greatly attracted the public. During the month of July, approximately 150.000 people come to see 40 to 50 diverse festival events.

The festival’s content varies from opera and ballet performances to the plays, the rock concerts, evenings of traditional love songs, the art exhibits, the literary evenings, the programs for children, the concerts of classical music and popular music, the movie screenings, folklore etc.

In the month of July, what with the local artists and the guest artists, Sarajevo becomes a true cultural center and breathes out a particular festival atmosphere.

“The Nights of Bascarsija” traditionally begin on July 1st, with “The Viennese Concert” performed by Sarajevo Symphony Orchestra and conducted by a guest conductor from Vienna. On that occasion, the festival is officially opened with 2500 to 3000 visitors. These have included a great number of local and foreign officials (the Canton Governor, the Government Premier, the High Representative of the International Community in B&H, Mr. Wolfgang Petritch).
