SHAKESPEARE'S SONETS Paweł Mykietyn

Cast: Arno Raunig (male soprano)

Zápisník zmizelého (The Diary of One Who Disappeared) by Leos Janaček (1921) i a cycle of twenty-two songs to the texts by Czech poet Ozef Kalda. The poems make up a story of a young man, who is blinded by passion for a young woman and abandons his family, his home; he destroys everything, only to be with her just for a brief moment. Janaček's work can be read autobiographically: it was the time when the composer's relationship with Kamila Stösslova, a married woman several years his junior, was born..

Sonety Szekspira (Shakespeare's Sonnets) by Paweł Mykietyn (2000) is a series of six songs for male soprano and piano. The subject of each is love. But in Shakespeare's sonnets the sex of the addressee is blurred; "you" is both feminine and masculine. The androgyny is complete with male soprano voice perversely selected by the composer... Mykietyn (b. 1971) is one of the most interesting young Polish composers; author of music for the majority of theatre performances by Krzysztof Warlikowski, clarinet player, founder of Monstrom ensemble. In 1995, his composition 3 for 13 was ranked at at International Rostrum for Composers in Paris. In 2001, the Chamber Hall of Polish National Opera saw the premiere of his first opera, Ignorant i szaleniec (The Ignoramus and the Madman) based on Thomas Bernhard's play.
