Who are the paparazzi? What is gonzo journalism, and who was the bestknown media player of the 1960s and’70s?
The exhibition shows familiar and less wellknown press images from over the years.
The exhibition is curated by PhD, researcher Hannu Vanhanen.

The history of photojournalism is one of heroism. That image has largely overshadowed the work of the paparazzi and celebrity photographers. Curator Hannu Vanhanen has now shuffled the photojournalistic pack of cards by dissolving the inbuilt division into high culture and popular culture. This exhibition brings together classic figures in photojournalism, famous press photographers and anonymous freelances, regardless of journalistic genre.

The Finnish Press Photograph of the Year competition is in danger of getting into a rut, and of becoming an institution that simply stares into its own viewfinder. The concept of photojournalism that it promotes must be expanded to correspond more closely to the colourful, multiform media arena. The news spectacles and portraits in this exhibition challenge viewers to re-think the relationship between serious and sensational photojournalism. Who is the victim and who is the actor in the great media game?
