Gallery K, Nicosia until end of September 2007 Ann Eastman: LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS OF HAMPSTEAD HEATH Jane MacLean: FIGURATIVE & STILL LIFE DRAWINGS & PAINTINGS, Mychael Barratt: FIGURATIVE, HAND-COLOURED ETCHINGS OF LONDON drawings, paintings & etchings by 3 Gallery K artists In the city people dream of beaches, sea breezes, country lanes, long lazy days in the warmth of the sun with a cool drink, and getting away from it all. But summer in the London has advantages: less insects, less sunburn and no airport queues. London is vibrant and entertaining – there are things to do and places to see; it’s a wonderful source of inspiration to many artists – the streets, parks and people are endlessly fascinating. For Hampstead-based artist JANE MACLEAN, Summer in the City is a vase of flowers or apples from her garden, women enjoying cool evening breezes and dreaming of romance. Working in the medium of oil and pigment, using a multiplicity of delicately controlled layers, she is a figurative painter who has a passion for depicting the human form, and as all artists know, it’s the most difficult subject of all, which is why classically taught students spend months – if not years - concentrating on life studies. Her draftsmanship is superb, she expresses form and the subtle play of light and shadow on skin, conveying energy and erotic symbolism. In this exhibition MacLean demonstrates her talent not only with handling paint, but also her ability with charcoal and graphite. Her bold yet delicately executed drawings have great sensitivity, and unlike many artists today, she invariably works from life rather than photographic images – and the difference is very apparent. MYCHAEL BARRATT arrived from Canada when he was 22, and fell in love with London and currentlylives in Muswell Hill. Considered to be one of the best printmakers in the country, the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers has commissioned him to write a book that will be published next year. He is a storyteller and his witty, technically brilliant hand-coloured etchings are loaded with references reflecting his enthusiasm for art history, theatre, literature, and London. Most of his work is inspired by London, such as his witty depiction of Battersea’s power station, alluding to the dogs home, and dogs in painting: spot the tiny terrier from the Arnolfini Wedding, Lucian Freud’s whippet and Hogarth with Trump. Although Mychael does occasionally paint, he thinks – like many etchers before him including Durer and Rembrandt – that through the medium of works on paper, his art is accessible to all. ANN EASTMAN`S work usually reflects her extensive travels around the globse, but for this exhibition she has produced three paintings of Hampstead Heath. Working in acrylics on canvas, she conveys the extraordinary peace and tranquillity of this truly amazing area of wild countryside, set within one of the largest cities in the world. _______________________ Gallery K 14 Evrou Street Strovolos, Nicosia Cyprus TEL : +357 22 341123 galleryk@cyatanet.com.cy www.gallery-k.co.uk |
