Shirley Hughes is one of the most admired and well-known illustrators of our time. This year sees the 25th Anniversary of ALFIE, one of her most famous picture book characters, and to mark this The Illustration Cupboard is showing and selling some of her most famous illustrations. There will also be an opportunity for visitors to view and purchase work from the current 2006 Catalogue. With over 250 pictures included in this list by 40 different artists there is a broad selection of well-known illustrators and more recent names. The Spring Exhibition also will include new work by Nicola Bayley from her recent Jungle Book, Alexis Deacon from While You Are Sleeping, and Gillian Tyler from Froggy – Went – A – Courting. Shirley Hughes is one of the most acclaimed illustrators in the world. Her talents have been recognized with several awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal for Dogger and also for Ella’s Big Chance. In 1984 Shirley won the prestigious Eleanor Farjeon Award for distinguished services to children and books, and in 1999 her valuable contribution to children’s literature was recognized when she was awarded the OBE.
