This is a true story. One Christian Woyzeck was accused of killing a girl and convicted, although in accordance with the then current state of knowledge he might well be declared insane (he suffered from frequent hallucinations and pathological feeling of guilt).

The source of Alban Berg's opera was Georg Büchner's play (1836) based on the said story. Berg saw Büchner's play in Vienna in 1921. He took to working immediately. The success of the opera's premiere performance in Berlin was immense and granted the composer recognition throughout the world. Until today, Wozzeck is considered a masterpiece of musical expressionism. Working on libretto Berg, after Büchner, changed the ending of the real story: having killed Maria, madness-stricken Wozzeck drowns himself.
