The Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean Opening exhibition “Eldorado†from 2 July to 20 November 2006 The Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Mudam, in Luxembourg, opens its doors to the public on 2nd July 2006. Directed by Marie-Claude Beaud, this new contemporary art venue will present a programme of temporary exhibitions open to all fields of present-day creation. Conceived by the Sino-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei, the new building has a total area of 9 000 square meters with almost 4 800 square meters of exhibition and public spaces. It houses, among other things, an auditorium, a shop and a cafeteria. Mudam is the first contemporary art museum in Luxembourg. Entirely conceived by artists, its vocation is to be attentive to international creation and developments in artistic practices. The main concept of the artistic programme is called “Be the Artists’ Guestâ€. This gives artists carte blanche to think up and create works specific to the gallery’s various activities: collection, exhibition, auditorium, education, café, boutique, reception... This concept gathers new commissions of works for the museum‘s collection as well as making the temporary arrangements for collection pieces under the eye of an artist. Entitled “Eldoradoâ€, the opening exhibition presents, with the participation of over sixty artists, the result of more than five years of research and organization of the “Be the Artists’ Guest†programme. Works from the main collection and new productions are displayed in a rich panorama of contemporary creation: painting, sculpture, installation, sound, video, photography, design, graphic design, fashion, new media... “Eldorado†shows the relationships that the different techniques have with each other and displays their coherence and how they complement each other in relation to themes that the artists transpose in their contemporary works. Mudam keeps a close eye on changes in these practices as part of its duty. Art is the expression of a poetic distance from the world, going beyond the tools which are used - the question of technique no longer matters.
