Motovun's annual film festival is central Istria's cultural highlight of the year. For fife days in late July this tiny medieval town is transformed into party, mad hub, occasionally patronized by some of the most famous names in this business, a mix between Sundance and Glastonbury. Expect enchanting open air screenings in the historic main square on balmy summer evenings. Established in 1999.with the stated aim of promoting independent films and film originating in countries with modest film industries, this small festival has burgeoned beyond all expectations. It's almost become too big.

AWARDS:
At the beginning, Motovun Film Festival was conceived as a noncompetitive program. However, as with many other aspects of the festival and contrary to initial aims of the organizers, events evolved through their own logic. So, Motovun Film Festival added new awards every year, reaching the list of five of them in total.
Nevertheless, the will to compete never took hold of Motovun completely. Although we are proud of every author who received any of our awards, we can still state that this festival is not about awards and awarding. Far from it.
The Propeller
Main award of the festival. It is given by an international jury to the best film in the main program.
FromAtoA
Introduced in 2003, the "FromAtoA" award is an attempt to help the films made in the region "from Albania to Austria" to break through their national boundaries and find their audience in neighboring countries. This award is a reaction to the current state in which films rarely leave their home countries. With the financial donation it aims to stimulate their distribution
FIPRESCI
Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique – the oldest and most prestigious association of film critics with members from around 50 countries of the world. The association's award, given by its international film critics juries, gained exceptional popularity among film authors.
Motovun online
The award for the best film up to 15 minutes long. It is given by a jury of young Croatian film professionals. Along with the Propeller, the oldest festival award.
Audience award
The best film by audience choice. Festival visitors can send their cell-phone text messages (VIP operator) and rate films from 1 to 5. The film with the best average rating is the winner.
