MaerzMusik opens with Luci mie traditrici by Salvatore Sciarrino, under the direction and design of Rebecca Horn – a portrayal of the catastrophe of unrequited love. The composer Beat Furrer will not only conduct Klangforum Wien in this performance, but also towards the end of the festival when he will present his own new music theatre production, Wüstenbuch, set on stage by Christoph Marthaler. In addition to this and four further music theatre productions, MaerzMusik 2010 also offers exceptionally well-cast orchestra and chamber music. The Staatskapelle Weimar will perform, among other works, Kessler’s Utopia and the Konzerthausorchester will dedicate themselves to the rediscovery of Nikolai Obuchow. The evening Sonic Arts Lounge events will present works by William Kentridge / François Sarhan, Frederic Rzewski, Michael Pisaro, and Bernhard Leitner, amongst others.

19 works – to a large extent commissioned – will be premiered in the context of MaerzMusik 2010 for example hans w. koch and John McGuire. ensemble pieces by Isabel Mundry and her pupil Saskia Bladt, by Johannes Schöllhorn and his pupil Meng-Chia Lin, Beat Furrer and Eduardo Moguillansky, ensemble pieces with electronics by Georg Friedrich Haas and Klaus Huber, Chamber music by Barbara Monk Feldman and – in honour of his 80th birthday – by Dieter Schnebel. The music theatre production Wüstenbuch by Beat Furrer (premiere, 14th March, Theater Basel) will enjoy its German premiere, string quartets by Salvatore Sciarrino, James Clarke and Olga Neuwirth – all commissioned works by MaerzMusik 2010.

Due to extensive renovation work at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, all concerts will take place in other prominent venues throughout Berlin.
