The beginnings of his exhibition projects go to the period after his graduation at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (1968 - 1974). The most of his professional activities before The Velvet Revolution in 1989 have mostly been realized on the non-official scene (exhibitions in alternative spaces, private flats etc.) as a result of his radical denying of the official dogmatic socialist realism doctrine and his personal philosophical and religious orientation. Then he came up with creating installation, inter-active art works, tending to the means of Process- and Light- art. Ladislav Čarný developed his strategy toward the audience as a dialogue with specific space (installations in-situ) and art works by other authors (appropriation, hommage, interpretation) which purpose aim always at the close communication with the beholder.

Since 1975 Čarný has began teaching (visual arts school for children). From the very beginning he also started to reflect the theoretical elaborates and cooperated with Institute of Methodics in Slovak Republic. His pedagogical activities culminated in 1992 by foundation of Pedagogical Department at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava and collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of Slovak Republic in preparation of new teaching rules for elementary schools.
