May 1 - 31, 2008 “love is hope, lets take the peg and let us catch it!†Ivan TUDEK Speaking of the role of play in human development, Vygotsky (1) states that in play a child creates an imaginary situation; that play is the place where a child spontaneously makes use of his ability to separate meaning from an object without knowing he is doing it. The creation of an imaginary situation is the first manifestation of the child’s emancipation. The child operates with an alienated meaning in a real situation. In the same time an important skill for successful functioning in adulthood has been created. Ivan Tudek, art academy student from Zagreb (Croatia) in his work reclaims his right to the game. Without avoiding responsibility, using art to resist processes of standardization, visual aggression of prevailing consumerism and dictates of often-dogmatic frame of art education, he creates zones of free expression, unburdened extensions of his own imagination enriched with still vivid imaginary of his childhood. Using precarious, cheap materials in his installations (thread, wire, carton, cloth) multiplying the very same object to provoke visual senses, to expand possibilities of visualization creating some sorts of visual illusions, apparitions, he tries to separate object from its meaning, reversing cognitive processes, creating the new play. "My childhood games – boomerang and racquets launching or just plain watering, water plays, today I associate with strong expression and high voltage of life that I would like to show through the meaning of symbols of the game from the past." Born in 1983. Ivan Tudek highly admires volcanoes, lava and parachutes.
