The Finnish Museum of Photography 13.8.2007 – 13.1.2008 What is photography really – optics, chemistry or visualized thought? The various relationships between photography and thinking are the theme of the new version of the permanent exhibition titled Aftercrop – A photograph is the spectacle of light marks, and the world is its stage. The new collection hanging contemplates the various relationships between photography, thinking and presentation, and where they take place. The thematic thread running through this exhibition is the idea that a photograph is an act showing the traces left by light, and that the world is a stage for photographs. The exhibition is curated by Harri Laakso, PhD. Even though a photograph is a most material image, it is unclear when it happens – is it when the camera is placed at light’s mercy, or later, in the theater of the mind. Time and place waver in photographs, the represented views have always already been, and even so, the presentation is always just about to begin. Doctor of Arts Harri Laakso works as Professor of Visual Culture at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, Pori School of Art and Media. He has previously worked as a photographer, curator and researcher and published several articles on art and photography in Finland and abroad. He is also the author of Valokuvan tapahtuma (The Event of Photography, Helsinki: Tutkijaliitto, 2003).
