A ROMAN BETWEEN MANNERISM AND BAROQUE ART

Curator: Dr. Sonja Brink

An exquisite set of more than forty drawings by Giovanni Baglione (1570 – 1643), enhanced by paintings from North American, Italian and German museums on loan to museum kunst palast for this first monographic exhibition, document the growing interest of art history for one of the most interesting artists on the threshold from Mannerism to Baroque art.

The collection of the Art Academy at museum kunst palast in Duesseldorf keeps a larger number of high-quality drawings by the Roman artist Giovanni Baglione than any other museum. However, there has never been an exhibition on this artist, so this will be a first.

Baglione, hitherto known mainly as Caravaggio's rival, worked for influential dukes and cardinals, even for the Pope – and made an appearance as "Principe" of the Art Academy in Rome. His frescoes and altarpieces are still found today in St. Peter's Cathedral, in San Giovanni in Laterano and in Santa Maria Maggiore, as well as in the churches of Lazio and Umbria. His works adorn a large number of museums and galleries around the world.

More than forty drawings will be on display, along with five paintings and a large number of prints.

The exhibit will present an excellent opportunity to make a comparative study of the drawings, sketches and drafts with the finished paintings, and thereby obtain a closer impression of this artist's world of ideas in a very special way.
