Valletta She makes her paintings between her studios in Gozo and London, being inspired by both her own country and the country she now calls home, Malta. You will see the Island's strong influence in her work with her ever present rich Mediterranean palette. She chose to describe her paintings as landscapes of life. They encompass all her experiences in life so far, countries she visits and people she meets, all of which make up her inspiration and desire to create her story on canvas. The essence of her work is to capture a moment in time, recording that fleeting moment or memory. She aims to immerse the viewer in a multi layered atmosphere leading them on an all consuming journey through colour and light. Recently the paintings have taken her on a brighter, more positive path, perhaps indicating a personal state of mind. They make her think of large gardens of life, joyous and fresh, even playful at times while at the same time harmonious and peaceful. She hopes to bring a smile or brightness to ones face, which is why she makes paintings, only to enlighten and uplift, not to darken or dampen. All her work is totally unplanned, preferring to let them show themselves to her, she moves through the painting process. They are made up of many layers of oil paint, thick and thin. She also uses ink and diluted watery mixtures to give areas of intense saturated colour. They are layered with symbols, history and myth expressing a total experience of place and being. The exhibition is being held at Tal-Pillar chapel, West Street, Valletta (near big Anglical church) between 1st and 30th November 2008. |
