The Latvian National Opera, 29.02.2008.




On February 29, for the first time, tenor Aleksandrs Antoņenko will perform in concert at the Latvian National Opera. The program includes works by Mascagni, Puccini, Verdi, Lehar and Strauss. With the Opera Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Normunds Vaicis.

The Riga-born and educated Antoņenko is a superb singer who began a successful international career at the age of 30. He thrills audiences with his wide vocal range and his ability to interpret challenging vocal and dramatic roles.

Antoņenko is a graduate of the Jāzeps Mediņš College of Music and the Latvian Academy of Music. He was a member of LNO's chorus as of 1997, bet debuted as a soloist in 1998. During the 2004/2005 season, he became the most renowned Latvian tenor internationally. Since 2004, he has appeared at Dusseldorf’s “Deutsche Opera am Rhein”, Dresden’s “Semperoper”, the Royal Opera houses in Oslo and Stockholm and sang in concerts in Israel, Poland, Estonia, Russia and Hong Kong.

Future plans include the role of Cavaradossi in “Aida” at “Deutsche Oper Berlin” in April and a concert performance of “Norma” with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Edita Gruberova and conductor Alexander Markovich. In July at the Munich Opera Festival, Antoņenko will sing Ismaele in “Nabucco”, in August comes his debut at the Salzburg Festival in the title role of “Othello” (conductor Ricardo Muti). The 2009/2010 season will bring his debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York in Dvorak’s opera “Rusalka” with the renowned American soprano Rene Fleming.
