51st International Belgrade Book Fair

October 24 – 30, 2006 51st International Belgrade Book Fair is the largest Book Fair in the region, one of the largest fair events in the Eastern and Central Europe and one of the three largest Book Fairs in Europe. This year, the Book Fair will include about 800 local and international exhibitors, whose editions will be displayed in the Halls 1 and 14, at 12,500 square meters. In addition to the publishers from Canada, Greece, Japan, France, UK, Italy, Spain, Israel, Portugal, Brazil, Angola, the Belarus Republic, Iran, Switzerland and other countries, the publishers from Indonesia and Pakistan will feature themselves to the Fair visitors for the first time. The Guest of Honor Country at this year's Book Fair are the United States of America. At the stand in the Hall 1 Arena, the guests will be Ms. Gish Jen, Ms. Yxta Maya Murrey, Ms. April Reynolds, Ms. Lynn Nottage, Ms. Larissa Szporluk and Ms. Natasha Radojcic. The guests from the USA will be also Ms. Patricia Schroeder, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Association of American Publishers, the famous Slavist, Mr. Andrew Baruch Wachtel, as well as the famous poet of Serbian origin, Mr. Charles Simic. The Cultural Attaches of the US Embassy in Belgrade, Mr. John Johnson, pointed out, among others, the special importance of this year, since the 125th Anniversary of Establishing Diplomatic Relations between our two respective countries is celebrated. As announced by Mr. Zoran Hamovic, the Art Director of this year's Fair, four central topics will be initiated at the 51st International Belgrade Book Fair: the Cultural Policy of Serbia within Publishing, Publishing or Book Publishing, A Unique Book Price and Development of the Book Selling System, as well as the topic What Kind of a Book Fair Do We Need? Among the numerous contents of the Book Fair, speeches, promotions, which will take place in the Conference Halls Slobodan Selenic and Borislav Pekic, as well as at the exhibitors' stands, the organizer would point out the importance of the School Day, which attracted attention of more than 30,000 visitors from the whole country, mostly students and their professors, just in one day, in 2005. This year, the School Day will take place on Thursday, October 26. The Managing Director of Belgrade Fair, Mr. Andjelko Trpkovic, pointed out significant investments into the infrastructure development in the Halls 1 and 14, which will provide a higher quality publishing participation.
